Memories Page 9

Hi Marcela, I wanted to fill you in on Girls Sports in 1969.

Well, it wasn't much to brag about. We only had G.A.A. or Girls Athletic Assoc. It wasn't affiliated with the High School Athletic Program or competetive with boys programs. I loved playing on the girls tennis team, though. Girls weren't included in many team sports in '69; maybe swimming, field hockey, badminton or tennis.

Basketball was only played half-court, and I don't even remember a softball team (I think they thought we might sweat or something!). Tennis was a sport I learned at age 10, so I had experience and qualified to play on the G.A.A. TEAM. I played doubles with my best friend, Nancy Petersen. We were awesome, but no one really noticed. I still play team USTA league team tennis at the ripe old age of 48. Actually, it's really a passion of mine that will last a lifetime. I'm glad I had the opportunity and guts to play then. Today, girls have much more exposure to sports in high school...they should try them all! It can be a life altering experience.

Each time I pay a winning match, I think of Nancy and miss her smile and happy attitude. She passed away in 1979 before Troy's 10th class reunion. I often think of her.
